Pierre Joseph Hel, Lille 1883

Joseph Hel advanced to become one of late-era Vuillaume's most important contemporaries as well as one of the most prominent French violin makers in the latter half of the 19th century.

Joseph Hel remained as a violin maker at the conservatory in Lille in constant contact to musicians who filled him with inspiration in terms of technical innovations. For example, he learned to improve his approach to drying tone woods, and he crafted a peg box with a shape which made very refined and very stable tuning possible. In keeping with the violin-making tradition dating back to Lupot, the joy that Joseph showed in experimenting with classic Italian models was not unusual for his day. His artisanal craftsmanship yielded instruments that were not only daring and innovative: they were always musically and aesthetically perfect as well. These pieces set new standards that were imitated and adopted by later generations of French violin makers. His highly appropriate sense of self-confidence led Hel to distinguish between his own numbered master instruments and violins made in his atelier; he used several stamps and signatures, some of which he concealed.

Labelled: “Stradivarius Moderne Fait par J.Hel, Luthier du Conservatorie de Lille, No.43 1883 Grande Medaille d’Or.”

Stamped twice: J.Hel

François Caussin, Mirecourt, c1860

Francois Caussin (1794-1866), the patriarch of the Caussin family renowned for crafting highly regarded copies of the Italian masters, was born in Rouvres-la-Chétive. He learned his trade under the direction of Louis Gaillard in Mirecourt before joining the ranks of Didier Nicolas D’Aine’s workshop in Paris and establishing himself independently around 1825 in the Northern French town of Neufchateau. His work is most commonly executed after Amati and Stradivari models but also follows Grancino and Seraphin, exhibiting a wide range of experimentation and influence by closer contemporaries such as J.B. Vuillaume, most notably in his thin, highly shaded and antiqued varnish that remains highly distinctive but many find not entirely dissimilar.

Labelled: “Giovanni Grancino in Contralla largha di Milano al Signo della Corona 1727”
